- Editorial by Serge Tranvouez, Director of the ESAD
A familiar ritual, yet always renewed.
A new class of 8 women and 6 men arrives, full of dreams and hopes, after a selective entrance exam.
They join those who have followed the same path in previous years and who now have their bearings within the school.
The seniors will welcome the newcomers during the first week of the ‘Phalanstère’, a time for group work and discussion organised and led by them.
Each class will then return to its own educational programme combining technical learning and creative workshops.
Each intervention is an experience blending transmission and research on stage. The guest artists extend their own artistic questioning at the school.
The ESAD places particular emphasis on women artists. This season, Julie Duclos, Elsa Granat, Alexandra Badéa, Léna Paugam, Margaux Eskenazi, Elise Chateauret, Mathilde Waeber, Clémence Gaillard, Brigitte Seth, Roser Montlló Guberna, Marie-Laure Baudain will lead research workshops.
Creators who remain loyal to the school, such as Arnaud Churin and Igor Mendjinsky, will also be present.
Jean D’Amérique, Koffi Kwahulé and Guillaume Cayet will all play an important part in writing.
The school continues to develop its partnerships with creative structures. New perspectives are opening with Theatre 13 with interventions by Maurin Ollès and Léna Paugam.
La fondation Hermès is sponsoring Thibaut Croisy’s visit as part of an exchange with Théâtre de la Cité Internationale.
The annual project with Théâtre de la Colline for school audiences has been renewed.
The ties with Plateaux Sauvages are apparent in a number of projects, including the workshop organised by Matthieu Roy in collaboration with Maison Maria Casarès.
The final show of the 2023 class led by Elsa Granat is supported by Theatre Paris Villette.
Lastly, an international exchange will be set up with the Uni24K National University of Dramatic Art and Cinema in Bucharest. A research project involving Romanian and French students will be undertaken by director Eugène Jebeleanu and author Yann Verburgh, leading to a production in autumn 2023.
The school also supports, this season, 11 professionals in their training for the State Diploma for Drama Teachers.
It continues to work tirelessly on the integration of students who graduated. The results are indeed very positive in this area, despite the Covid years.
For example, Marie Mahé from the class of 2020 has just won the Theatre 13/young directors prize; Sébastien Khéroufi from the class of 2021 is supported by the ateliers de la Villa Médicis for a future production; three actresses from the class of 2021 have been involved in the young troupes of the national dramatic centres; 8 actors and actresses out of 11 from the class of 2022 had offers right after leaving school.
These impressive results provide daily encouragement to an entire team at the service of future creators of the performing arts.
