Presentation of State Diploma for Drama Teachers

This diploma is aimed at active actresses, actors and/or directors who combine their artistic practice with their educational approach.

The theater teacher is a “pedagogical artist” who combine their artistic practice with their teaching approach.

The State Diploma for Drama Teachers is part of the European higher education system with the implementation of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), validating the acquisition of 120 European credits.

It is registered with the French Ministry of Culture in the National List of Professional Certification, RNCP 38370 on 01/12/2023, and classified at level 5.

The State Diploma for Drama Teachers is defined by the reference framework of professional activities, certification and assessment set out in appendix 1-II of the decree of 21 November 2023 on the State Diploma for Drama Teachers.

The Role Of The Drama Teacher As “Teaching Artist”

State-certified drama teachers are responsible for transmitting the practice of dramatic art.

Depending on the case, they are responsible for teaching introductory activities, leading initial learning, and thus acquiring the fundamental knowledge, know-how and interpersonal skills required for students to practise independently.
They can be involved in students’ pre-vocational education.
In addition, they can run training sessions or workshops, and design and carry out operations to raise awareness on the world of theatre.

In addition to their teaching activities, they must constantly question their artistic references through practice and continuous professional training.

Position Framework

Drama teachers work in:

  • Public music, dance and drama schools run by local authorities that offer a drama course. (CRR, CRD or district conservatoire)
  • Associative schools and public or private cultural structures, with or without links to creation and distribution structures (CDN, theatres, troupes, MJC).
  • University departments and schools under the Ministry of Education.
  • Drama teachers can work in collaboration with artists from other performing arts sectors (music, dance, circus arts, street arts, etc.), and lead projects with various partners (heritage, public reading, general education, socio-cultural sector, health and social sector, etc.).

The State Diploma for Drama Teachers is awarded by higher education institutions accredited by the French Ministry of Culture:
